Maintenance and adjustment to the vertical action cutting head

These instructions are for use on the vertical action head used on the Evolution E2, Javelin Integra, Javelin Series 2 and Sabre Series 2.

Before you start

Before starting any work, check that you have the following equipment:

  • Light engineering oil
  • Allen key (Hex key)

1. How to lubricate the vertical action blade holder for smooth action

The blade holder moves up and down on a hardened steel guide way, this will occasionally require lubrication.

  • Remove the blade holder and press down the backing plate (B) to reveal the top edge of the guide plate (A).
  • Put one or two small drops of light engineering oil where the two plates come into contact.
  • Move the backing plate (B) up and down a few times.
  • Check the sliding action of the backing plate (B) if it is not moving smoothly it may require adjustment.

2. How to adjust the sliding action of the backing plate

Rotate the screw circled in red to increase/decrease the amount of sideways movement between the backing plate and the guide plate. Be careful as the smallest amount of adjustment on the screw can make a large difference in side-play. Rotate the screw clockwise to tighten the sliding action and anti-clockwise loosen it.

Check the backing plate springs back up after being released and there is no side-play, if it does not spring back up the spring could be broken.
