The free video-based training course takes viewers from basic framing skills, such as squaring the board, to specialist techniques like creating double decorative inlays. If you are an experienced framer wishing to enhance your skills, or someone new to picture framing who wants to learn the fundamentals of mount/mat cutting, this is the perfect course for you.
An experienced teacher, David provides clear, detailed video demonstrations with easy-to-follow instructions on each mount/ mat cutting technique. The 18 episodes are divided into individual framing skills. The idea is that you can learn mount cutting in your own time by playing the video at your workbench and following David’s demonstration, or by just relaxing and watching an episode at your leisure.
Creating the Masterclass with David
Our creation of the Masterclass is just one of Keencut’s many new initiatives to support its product users, and we are delighted that we could partner with such an acclaimed expert. David has established a reputation for quality work, pushing the boundaries of design and convention. He was a finalist in his first national framing competition in 1997 and won his first award the following year. Over the years, David has been a consistent finalist and winner of numerous framing competitions. He was one of the first to qualify as a Guild Commended Framer (GCF) in 1994 and became a Guild examiner for the London area. David also served on the Guild’s Framing Standards Committee. Having owned the Eagle Galleries in Epsom and Carshalton, he relocated in 2016 to Silverstone, back to his roots in motor racing, to start a new venture, Silverstone Framing. David now specialises in creative framing, teaching, and demonstrating. He has lectured for the Fine Art Trade Guild and demonstrated framing at trade shows for various companies. He has written numerous articles for trade magazines such as Art Business Today, Picture Framing Magazine, 4 Walls and The Picture Business.
Keencut’s framing history
Throughout the Masterclass, David uses the Keencut Ultimat Futura to demonstrate many of the mount cutting techniques. Keencut’s first ever products were for the picture framer. We began trading in 1982 when our founder invented a new type of oval and circle cutter for the picture framing industry. The success of the product led to the addition of a completely new design of straight-line mount-cutters. Our pioneering use of aluminium extrusions, early adoption of CNC and CAD technology, and high build quality transformed equipment for the picture framing industry. Within a few years, Keencut was the world’s leading designer and manufacturer, with exports to over 50 countries. Today’s Ultimat Futura has evolved by keeping the best features from past machines and improving or upgrading certain features to suit changes in mount/mat boards. As a result, we believe that we have the best machine of its kind in the world.Â
